Renting a car in Barcelona opens up far more than the city. The metro is excellent for the centre, so most visitors rent a car for the day trips: the beaches of the Costa Brava, the monastery at Montserrat, the wineries of Penedès and the road north to Girona and the Pyrenees. We are a booking service, tell us your dates and the type of car and we find an available vehicle from a vetted local rental company in Barcelona.
Which car to rent in Barcelona
- Economy and compact, a SEAT Ibiza, Renault Clio or VW Polo is cheap to run and easy to park in the narrow streets of the old town.
- SUV, a SEAT Ateca or VW Tiguan for families and longer trips into the mountains.
- Convertible, the coast roads along the Costa Brava are made for an open top.
- Electric, Barcelona has a low-emission zone (ZBE) and plenty of charging, so an EV is both cheap and unrestricted.
Car rental prices in Barcelona
Rates depend on the season and how long you rent. Summer is peak season on the coast, so book early for July and August; winter brings the lowest prices. Economy cars start from about $30 per day, SUVs from around $60 and convertibles from roughly $90. The price table above shows indicative day, week and month rates by class; the exact quote, deposit and mileage limit are confirmed before you pay.
Low-emission zone and parking
Central Barcelona is a low-emission zone (ZBE Rondes): older, non-compliant cars are restricted on weekdays. Every car we book is ZBE-compliant, so you can drive in the city without a fine. Parking in the centre is mostly paid (blue and green zones); many travellers park at the hotel and use the car for trips out of town.
Documents and conditions
To book you need a passport or ID, a driving licence and a card for the deposit. EU and EEA licences are accepted directly; other visitors usually need an International Driving Permit. The minimum age is normally 21 and a young-driver fee can apply under 25. Mileage is usually unlimited and tolls (peajes) on some motorways are paid by the driver.
