Madrid sits at the centre of Spain, which makes it the best base for a driving holiday. The metro covers the city, so most visitors rent a car for the day trips: the walled city of Toledo, the aqueduct at Segovia, the palaces of Aranjuez and the mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama. We compare vetted local rental companies in Madrid and link you straight to live prices, so you book at a fair local rate.
Which car to rent in Madrid
- Economy and compact, a SEAT Ibiza or Renault Clio is cheap to run and easy to park.
- SUV, a SEAT Ateca or VW Tiguan for families and trips into the sierra.
- Electric, Madrid’s low-emission zone makes an EV both cheap and unrestricted in the centre.
- Luxury and sports, sedans and a few sports cars for business and special occasions.
Car rental prices in Madrid
Rates depend on the season and length of rental. Spring and autumn are busiest; the hottest summer weeks are quieter and cheaper. Economy cars start from about $28 per day, SUVs from around $60 and luxury cars from roughly $160. The price table above shows indicative rates by class.
Low-emission zone and parking
Central Madrid runs a low-emission zone (Madrid 360 / ZBE) that restricts older, non-compliant cars. Every car our partners supply is compliant, so you can drive in the centre without a fine. Parking in the centre is mostly paid (SER zones); many travellers park at the hotel and use the car for trips out of town.
What you need to rent
You need a passport or ID, a driving licence and a card for the deposit. EU and EEA licences are accepted directly; other visitors usually need an International Driving Permit. The minimum age is normally 21 and a young-driver fee can apply under 25. Tolls (peajes) on some motorways are paid by the driver.
